Noël J. Akers
Noël is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. He is also a Registered Trade Mark Agent in the UK. He graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Chemical Engineering before qualifying in the patent and trade mark profession.
Noël has worked with a number of international corporations and law firms and spent a considerable length of time practising European patent law in the United States. Noël has developed a specialty in coordinating patent procurement and litigation in cases involving actions in the US and Europe.
Noël has extensive experience in all aspects of the procurement, enforcement and exploitation of intellectual property, and has published widely on intellectual property rights.
Graeme is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. He is also a UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney. He graduated from The University of St Andrews with a degree in Physics before qualifying in the patent and trade mark profession.
Graeme has worked with a number of law firms and international corporations, including BlackBerry. While at BlackBerry, Graeme was responsible for their European Patent strategy and aligning it with business objectives. Graeme also worked in Aberdeen, Scotland for several years focusing on oil and gas exploration and production technologies. He has considerable experience of standards related patent applications and crafting claims to maximise value in a cost efficient manner.
Graeme handles a wide range of subject matter including wireless technologies, such as LTE, user interfaces, software, medical devices, mechanical devices, optics and opto-electronics and oil and gas exploration and production technologies. Graeme also has extensive experience in trade mark matters, including oppositions and enforcement of trade marks and design rights.
Mary White is a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney and registered Irish Trade Mark Agent. Mary has extensive experience in advising domestic and international clients on a wide range of IP issues including the filing and prosecution of trade mark applications, clearance searches, portfolio management, and trade mark infringement as well as oppositions and cancellation actions. She has successfully represented clients at oral proceedings before the UKIPO.
Mary has assisted clients with both contentious and non-contentious matters before the UKIPO, IPOI, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Her clients range from multinational corporations to SMEs enterprises across many industries including software, medical technologies, manufacturing, fashion and retail, hospitality and food. She also has particular experience of working with clients overseas, including North America and China. Prior to working with NJ Akers & Co., Mary worked with one of the leading Irish law IP service providers where her experience included setting up and managing the firm’s China service desk.
Mary is a member of APTMA (Association of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys) and also an Expert Technical Committee Member for ISO, the International Standards Organization, on Innovation Management, and has contributed to the development of the global IP management standard, ISO 56005:2020.
Guy joined NJ Akers & Co in 2019 as a Trainee Patent Attorney, working under the supervision of Noel and Graeme. He graduated from the University of Bristol with a master’s degree in Physics with Industrial Experience.
Whilst at University, Guy worked on placement within the Technology Scouting and Feasibility Team at Merck Chemicals Ltd. Following graduation, Guy joined the UK Intellectual Property Office, where he worked as a Patent Examiner for almost three years.
Guy has experience in UK patent prosecution, including Search and Examination, as well as a broader awareness of procedures at the EPO and WIPO.
Rowena is a qualified Patent Paralegal and a member of Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys. Rowena joined NJ Akers & Co in 2008 and expanded her role to include all matters relating to Patent filing and prosecution administration in the UK, Europe and Worldwide.
Rowena provides admin and paralegal support in the patent department, dealing with document review and management, filing of patent applications, monitoring of deadlines and procedures for foreign filings.
Suzanne has been with NJ Akers & Co since 2006 and is currently studying an accounting course in Xero to further enhance her accounting skills.
Suzanne issues invoices, handles incoming and outgoing payments and is responsible for all aspects of our accounting systems and services.
Dawn joined NJ Akers & Co in 2012. Dawn mans the reception with Jo and they will be your first point of contact when telephoning the office with any enquiries and will be there to greet you on arrival.
Dawn carries out a wide range of administrative duties in respect of patent cases and is responsible for attending to the renewals of granted patents. She also ensures that the office runs smoothly and efficiently.
